Prosection Views: Dimensional Inference through Sections and Projections

چکیده

We present some basic properties of two general graphical techniques for constructing views of high-dimensional objects, projection and section. Projections can easily display aspects of structure that are only of low dimension, while sections, i.e., intersections of subspaces with a highdimensional object, can easily display structure of only low codimension (and hence often high dimension). However, compositions of sections and projections, here called prosections, can display aspects of structure of any intermediate dimension. These statements are relevant for data analysis: projections of data can be easily generated with x-yscatterplots, 3-D data rotations, and grand tours, while sections can be approximated in existing systems by scatterplot brushing and painting. Thus this paper is in part an investigation into the principles underlying these techniques. hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Authors’ Address: Bellcore, 445 South Street, P.O. Manual Controls For High-Dimensional Data Projections

Projections of high-dimensional data onto low-dimensional subspaces provide insightful views for understanding multivariate relationships. In this paper we discuss how to manually control the variable contributions to the projection. The user has control of the way a particular variable contributes to the viewed projection and can interactively adjust the variable's contribution. These manual c...

Tomographic three-dimensional reconstruction of cilia ultrastructure from thick sections.

We have applied a computer-based tomographic technique to reconstruct the three-dimensional ultrastructure of newt lung cilia. Epon-embedded samples were cut into 0.25-micron-thick sections that were imaged at 1 MV with a high-voltage electron microscope. For the reconstruction shown, a tilt series of 53 micrographs was taken at tilt angles between -54 degrees and +50 degrees. The reconstructio...

Visual Exploration of High-Dimensional Data: Subspace Analysis through Dynamic Projections

Understanding high-dimensional data is rapidly becoming a central challenge in many areas of science and engineering. Most current techniques either rely on manifold learning based techniques which typically create a single embedding of the data or on subspace selection to find subsets of the original attributes that highlight the structure. However, the former creates a single, difficult-to-in...

Kernel Subspace Mapping: Robust Human Pose and Viewpoint Inference from High Dimensional Training Sets

A novel markerless motion capture technique called Kernel Subspace Mapping (KSM) is introduced in this thesis. The technique is based on the non-linear unsupervised learning algorithm, Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA). Training sets of human motions captured from marker based systems are used to train de-noising subspaces for human pose estimation. KSM learns two feature subspace repr...
